We had kindergarten orientation yesterday. Charles got back from his meetings out of town in time to meet us there. (As in, we arrived at the same time and got to park beside each other.)
Adia's teacher is brand-new, which is kinda cool, since it's just like Miss Binney in Ramona. :) A was painfully shy and opted not to play with the toys while the teacher talked to the parents. (She stayed with us.) Unfortunately we hadn't gotten the heads-up that they would be offered the chance to take a practice ride on the bus. I say unfortunately because that meant we didn't have any time to prepare her. She flipped and declared we would be driving her to school everyday. (No.) So her first experience on the schoolbus will be the first day of school.
I gave the teacher a heads-up that Adia is reading on at least a 2nd grade level already. I'm not sure she believed me, but she said they do evals a few weeks into classes, so I guess they'll find out then.
Overall, I'm pretty sure we're making the right decision to put her in school. The academics of homeschooling her don't worry me, but the socialization does. I know most kids are fine being homeschooled, and I'm not knocking it in the least. But Adia really needs to have the chance to get out there alone and learn how to socialize with her peers. (And new adults too.)

Geekiness ahoy!
My TI-89 is of the older variety, so it doesn't have the full statistics package on it. I could put it on there, except my cable is missing, and the local Radio Shack doesn't carry them.
So I wrote a program to make my calculator do what I needed it to do. Heee!

One and a half trips to town later...
Last night, I called in a refill for Adia's nebulizer meds. We had enough for last night and this morning, but we'd need one before bed.
Charles took my car to work with him to get the oil changed today, and he planned to swing by the drug store on the way home to pick up the prescription. First problem: the mechanic didn't have power, so he wouldn't know until after work if they'd been able to take care of it or not.
He walked to work (only a couple blocks) and found out his 1:00 meeting (to run 3 hours) was actually at 2:30. Second problem: I needed to get groceries, and the car wasn't going to be home until 6. I guess I could've been a good hippie and walked to the grocery store like 5 miles away. In the heat advisory. Down a 2-lane 55MPH highway.
The kids must have somehow known that we were cooped up at home and that Mommy could be driven crazy even easier today. Third problem: I couldn't do my usual and take them out somewhere. We went out in the backyard, but it was still meltdown city. It was better than Francesca's repeated climbing on the couch to jump up and sit down. And if I tried to grab her, she'd crawl full-force toward the picture window and give me a heart attack. They spent most of the time playing with rainwater in the collapsed upside-down plastic pool. (We've gotten like 5" in the last two or three days. It was uggggggly.)
Charles got out of his meeting at 5:20, the car was done, and he brought home dinner. Afterwards, I went to town to get groceries (and ice cream, since I was clever enough to get cash back at the store.) I started to head home and called my parents just to chat. (Built-in Bluetooth rules!) Charles beeped in to ask if I'd gotten by the drug store.
D'oh.
Luckily he caught me right before the last chance to turn around for a couple of miles, so I cut through that parking lot and went back for drugs. Fourth problem: they found mine (Rx toothpaste, yay) but Adia's was lost. 5 minutes and some melted ice cream later (Charles') they found it on the counter.
So she got her nebbie, Charles got his ice cream, and I got to take my Stat quiz and get 100. Yay.
I need to listen to the rest of the lectures before I re-attempt the unit quiz, though. That's okay, because I uploaded them to my Zune, and I can listen to them while I do dishes. :)

Panic time
It didn't occur to me until yesterday that my kids will need somewhere to be starting next fall. (As in 2009.) I hadn't put too much thought into anything regular, but now I'm realizing it's not just Adia that we'll be paying some kind of tuition of some kind for.
As it stands right now, there are two schools I would consider putting Adia in (one Montessori and another that focuses on science, tech, and math.) Those would accept Francesca too. There's also the base center, but that would only apply to Francesca. Of course, I can only find information about tuition for the Montessori school, and it's far more than my college tuition. To put both of them in for one year will be equivalent to two full years of college for me. (Yikes.) The base center looks AWESOME, but I know they usually have a long waiting list. I may have to send Charles by to get more information tomorrow. (He's on foot today -- dropping my car to get the oil changed.)
The other thing about putting Francesca somewhere is that I'm going to have to be super-comfortable with their methods of discipline, because she's going to be 3 and some change. Big discipline time.
On a happier note, let me close with another picture. (J took this at the LLL mess party last week. I hope she doesn't mind my stealing it from her myspace. :)

How can you argue with this?

Pure bliss.
We went to the berry farm this morning, intending to play and pick. When we got there, J let us know it was really muddy. Plans changed to just picking.
We picked almost 8 quarts, which means we now need plastic jelly jars for freezer jam. (I sure hope the dollar store has them!) We grabbed a pint of raspberries too. (I let Adia pick between cherries and raspberries.) Then we decided "what the heck" and let the kids play. I think A (not Adia.. the other A) must've gotten in the mud first. Then Adia figured it out. Both she and M were COVERED in mud by the time we all left. I made her take off her shoes and shorts for the ride home. C and her crew and L and her crew came over for playset time and then inside time. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and we're all going to C's house tomorrow.
And as I'm writing this, I'm realizing I must've done something good to my elbow. It's been sore all day, like I bumped it. I just put it side-by-side with my other elbow, and it's actually pretty swollen. Oops.
Also, I had a Bio test last night, and I'm pretty sure I aced it. This prof lets us see our multiple choice answers and a general outline of what he wanted for essays. (After we complete it, of course.) I think I hit most of the higher points.

Adia and the po-po
Last week, one of Adia's friends told her to "Watch out for the po-po!" as we were leaving.
We went to dinner last night with my mom, and as we were leaving, Adia turned to Charles and said "Watch out for the po-po, Daddy!"
With the police chief right behind them. HAHA!
Fortunately, he has a good sense of humor.
--
After Mom got home from dinner, Dad said he wasn't feeling so hot. (And he didn't look so good while we were there either.) They wound up going to the ER (at the same hospital where Francesca will be having her dental work.) He has pneumonia, which sucks, but is a lot better than the dozens of other things I was worrying about!
--
Okay, now I need to get to studying, as I'm hiding out in the bedroom for that very reason. I'm hoping to take my BIO test tomorrow, but it depends on how confident I feel this evening. I also have a lab due by midnight tomorrow and a discussion board post on Stats tonight.

Overwhelmed
Today's horoscope:
As your life becomes more complicated, you may be longing to get back to basics. Nevertheless, you are drawn into a complex and tangled web. You might want to complain, but you also realize you have to handle any situation -- even if it makes you crazy. Be determined and push your way through the intensity, and if necessary, make it up as you go along.
Right now, I'm taking things one step at a time. If I don't, I'm going to sink. At the very least, I'll start thinking too much about how life is going at the moment, and I'm trying to avoid that.
This morning I focused on getting Adia a pediatrician appointment.
After that, I focused on surviving until the appointment.
After that, I focused on getting through the initial part of the appointment.
After that, I focused on giving Adia a breathing treatment in the exam room while Francesca did her best to climb on things and fall.
After that, I focused on getting a treatment plan.
After that, I focused on driving to the pharmacy. (Although I made a wrong turn and decided to swing through Starbucks drive-thru. I literally had nothing but caffeine until Charles got home and made me drink water with dinner.)
After that, I focused on driving home.
After that, I focused on eating dinner.
After that, I focused on getting to school orientation. So much so that I didn't give Charles and Adia hugs or kisses goodbye. (Francesca came with.)
After that, I focused on driving to the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions.
After that, I focused on the idea of driving to Richmond tomorrow for Francesca's dentist appointment.
I had to backtrack and focus on school for tonight. I got school off to a fab start by not buying one of my labs for BIO and then forgetting to attach files to an email to my stats prof. A+!
Now I need to go try to fall asleep so I can drive to Richmond, then to the farm to pick up CSA goodies, and then to the coffee shop for breastfeeding cafe night.

Random
Francesca is going to the dentist I wanted her to go to next Tuesday. (She could've gone tomorrow were it not for the illness of doom.)
Her temp is around 103 at the moment, and A's is back below 100, I think. Looking to be another Motrin night. Also, a take-out night. I don't think I can safely set F down anywhere to cook without her falling over. (She's weeeeeeeak. In good spirits, but weak.)
School for the fall is going to suck, because the online speech class that I wanted to take is full. Also, there are no online history classes, and I can't take college chem because I would need middle-of-the-day childcare MWF. So it's looking like I get to drive to the nearest campus twice a week for Calc OR drive to the next nearest campus once a week for speech. What my other class is going to be, I have no idea...

The girls' grills
I'm so witty.
We took the girls to the dentist today.
The good news: Both girls sat pretty peacefully in the chair by themselves. Adia's teeth are perfect, no cavities. :)
The bad news: Francesca's front four teeth may have to come out. This dentist can't do it (take them out OR try to repair them), so she referred us to one that is about 2 hours away.
I think I'm going to try and get her an appointment with the second opinion dentist in Richmond from when we had Adia's teeth worked on. They didn't offer in-office sedation, but our dental insurance covers general anesthesia now. That makes things a little easier. Especially since I have a weird gut feeling about the in-office thing with Francesca. I didn't have it with Adia, and hers went fine, so I don't know where it's coming from. I just feel like I'd rather have her in a hospital than in an office.
--
Other fun from today were trips to the mall and Borders. Adia and Charles started The Secret Garden tonight. Francesca went to sleep in like 5 minutes. Still waiting on Adia.. unless Charles fell asleep reading to her. It was a looooonnnng night last night. Of course, Adia spent it alone from like 8:15 to 6:15, so that's progress there too! (Charles usually has to go in at least once.)
Tomorrow I get to spend the day doing the laundry that has been neglected between the meeting yesterday and the trip today. We may try to carve out a little trip to storytime, but it depends on how much sleep I get tonight.

4.0, officially
Annnnd, my pre-calc score was finally posted. I got a 91 on the final (say what?! I was expecting lower) and a 95 average overall. :) So, all A's!
Now how to tactfully reply to the classmate who emailed last night asking how I did and saying how hard/unfair it was.

Current grade tally
SOC: A (But I've known that since the middle of last month when she told me I was exempt from the final test and project.)
BIO: A (Remember that paper about Lactobacillus acidophilus? Totally for shits and giggles, because I didn't need it for my A. Also, Phytophthora infestans and Protoreaster nodosus. At least I learned something?)
MTH: Probably an A (I took the final Wed. night, even though it wasn't due until Monday night. When I averaged my grades and realized that I could score as low as a 54 on the final and still get an A, I decided that any points I lost to unpreparedness would be made up for in lowered stress from studying. I could've skipped it altogether and made a B in the class.)
So I'm done until May 19th, which is orientation for the online classes. I've already picked up my BIO DVD's for 102, but I still have to wait to get my Statistics CD.
Oh, and I had been worried that I was just doing BIO101 and 102 for fun, but it turns out that they are pre-reqs for all of the higher level Bio classes in the major. :) Time to cross my fingers that they offer College Chem next fall at the campus nearest me.

Beating my head against the wall
My groupmate has blown off getting online twice this week. He said he'd be on last night, but from looking at the "views" to my post asking what time he'd be on, he never even looked at it. Charles and I are having a date Saturday night (whaaa?), the paper is due on Monday, and I still have to have time in there to do Bio homework.
The funny thing was that he was all gung-ho about getting it done last Thursday. Because he thought it was due that night. Once I told him it wasn't, he said we could work on it Tuesday. And then didn't show up for that. Then said we could work on it Thursday. Again with the no-show.
I'm sure it's possible he had something come up. But a 2 second phone call would tell me that, and I could devote 100% of my time to the other stuff I have due. (I still probably devoted about 80% of my time to writing my L. acidophilus paper, but I still had to spend time (a) watching to see if he got online and (b) getting annoyed when he didn't.)
Whatever, I'm all but finished with my Bio papers, and they are also due Monday. :) I've turned in two of them, and I just need to proof the last one and add a few links to videos, etc.

Vagina
This study is just fascinating to me.
As a summary, they were studying the oral flora of newborns compared to the vaginal-rectal flora of their mothers, specifically looking at lactobacilli transmission through birth. Granted, it's an older study (1975) but still really freaking cool as far as I'm concerned! (Just in case you're wondering, there does seem to be a correlation at birth, but it's pretty much gone in the infant after 6 days.)
And when your choices for a paper are basically botulism, diptheria, tuberculosis, anthrax, tetanus, leprosy, listeria, or lactobacilli... the vaginal flora wins. If I have to read about something, at least let it not be deadly. (I already did that with oomycota and fish kills and plant blights and such.)
